A NAMESAKE street sign proved costly for a Coast man after his "cave" was searched by police.
In September, police searched Troy Andrew McDonald's, 43, Maroochydore home and found a street sign for McDonald St - stolen from an unknown location - in his garage with the brackets still attached.
When questioned, McDonald claimed his late father had given it to him six or seven years ago and that he believed it had been bought, not stolen.
McDonald said many of his friends had similar signs in their "man caves", but refused to give police their names.
He pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday to a single count of possessing tainted property.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist acknowledged the sign must have been an "attractive item", and fined McDonald $250.
