Man charged after two men assaulted

A MAN has been charged with assault following an incident at Southport last night.

Around 8.15pm two men, 37 and 43, left a Stevens Street business when they were allegedly confronted by two men and an altercation ensued. It will be alleged the two men pushed the 37-year-old man a number of times with the 43-year-old man attempting to separate them.

One of the two men then allegedly punched the 37-year-old man to the head causing him to fall to the ground, striking his head. The two men then allegedly continued to assault the fallen 37-year-old before the older man was able to pull them away.

The two men initially ran off before one allegedly returned and threatened the 43-year-old forcing him to retreat into the business.

A bystander approached and restrained the man until police arrived.

Police dog squad then located a second man nearby, allegedly hiding in a laundry of a house, and took him into custody.

The 37-year-old man from Victoria was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening head injuries.

The 43-year-old man, also from Victoria, was not injured.

A 20-year-old Eight Mile Plains man has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, possessing dangerous drugs and possess utensils or pipes. He is expected to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on May 11.
