Man jailed nine years for raping young boy

A 27-YEAR-OLD Mackay man who pleaded guilty to raping a child has been jailed for nine years.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced in the District Court in Mackay on Tuesday after pleading guilty last week to nine charges including maintaining a sexual relationship with a child, indecent treatment of a child under 16, indecent treatment of a child under 12 and rape.

Judge Deborah Richards told the court the sexual offences occurred over a period of about 12 months, while the child was aged under eight years, and ended when the man made a partial confession.

Judge Richards said the child had been "significantly affected" by the man's actions, as had the boy's family.

She said the community demanded young and vulnerable victims be protected from such acts.

The man will not be eligible for parole until February 21, 2020.
