Man jailed for having child sex images, videos on laptop

A MAN tried deleting a child porn collection off his laptop, but this did not fool police.

Officers made the discovery when they forensically analysed Donnybrook man Cary Glenn Phelps's computer and retrieved all the deleted files, which included about 800 images and 50 videos.

Brisbane District Court Chief Judge Kerry O'Brien said the material was "disgusting".

Among the material was a video of sexual acts with a girl aged about three years old and unprotected sex with children, the court heard.

Phelps, 52, was sentenced to jail on Wednesday (October 7) after pleading guilty to two child porn charges; possessing child exploitation material and distributing it between August 2012 and August 2013.

He was charged with the distribution offence because he downloaded the material from the internet using peer-to-peer file sharing software that also allows this material to be shared with others, the court heard.

The court also heard Phelps was already serving a jail term after being found guilty of child sex offences last year.

He would have been eligible for parole in June next year but after Wednesday's sentence his time in jail has been extended.

Judge O'Brien said some of the material on his laptop was "disgusting" but there had been other court cases which involved more degrading videos and images.

"These are not victimless offences," he said. "Every time anyone accesses material of this sort they are contributing in some way to the exploitation of a child somewhere in the world."

Phelps was sentenced to a year in jail to be added to his three-year jail sentence received for the past child sex crimes.

He will now be eligible for parole in October next year.
