A man is believed to have been shot by police in Sydney's west.

NSW police say initial reports suggest the man was shot during a confrontation with officers.

A police operation is still under way at Acacia Ave, St Marys.

Emergency services are at the scene and there are no persons outstanding, police say.

The public is urged to avoid the area.
