THE local mayor says one of his streets have become like a 'war zone' after a man was fatally stabbed in the latest violent incident in the area.
A woman remains on the run after the fatal stabbing in the Melbourne suburb of Abbotsford last night.
Forensic investigators are this morning probing the scene at the corner of Victoria St and Lennox St as they piece to together the brutal attack.
Police say the victim, believed to be aged in his 30s, was stabbed with an 'edged weapon' outside the Bakers Arms Hotel about 9.20pm.
The scene, near Nicholson St, is about 500m from the North Richmond Community Health Centre, which is expected to be approved to run Victoria's first medically supervised drug injecting centre.
City of Yarra mayor Amanda Stone this morning described Victoria St like a "war zone" due to the public drug use.
"It's felt like a war zone down here for local traders and residents," she said.
"They're facing the consequences of public drug use everyday, picking up syringes, they're calling ambulances and doing CPR."
Ms Stone said the responsibility for the lack of action has fallen on the locals and it was time for a safe injecting room.
A local trader, Van Dint, told the Herald Sun he was not surprised to hear someone had been attacked.
"I'm not shocked someone died," he said.
"It can be a rough area ... people fighting and taking drugs."
Mr Dint who owns Minh Tan Vietnamese restaurant on Victoria St said he worries for his wife's safety "all the time".
"When she's finishing work at night time I worry, it's not safe sometimes," he said.
"I don't know why there are fights all the time."
Mr Dint said he saw "many" police cars when he was closing his restaurant last night.
"I didn't know a man died until this morning," he said.
The victim was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition, but later died.
Police believe the man knew his attacker. No arrests have been made.
Detectives are urging any witnesses to come forward.
Victoria St has reopened after being closed overnight and early this morning.
Premier Daniel Andrews announced yesterday Victoria's first medically supervised drug injecting centre would be set up in North Richmond.
