Man Utd won't panic buy despite string of losses

MANCHESTER United will not spend any more money on players despite three defeats in a week that have put new manager Jose Mourinho under early pressure.

The club spent heavily in the off season and believes further emergency purchases are unnecessary, despite weaknesses in defence and central midfield being shown up in the 3-1 defeat at Watford.

United feels the combined $A250 million outlay on Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly is enough, along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's $A346,000-a-week wages.

The problems United experienced in central midfield stem from Mourinho's struggle to find the right balance, with Wayne Rooney's recent poor performances adding to the sense that the captain is being indulged.

A fan poll has found that 99.08% of United supporters believe Rooney should be dropped by Mourinho, whose side faces mid-table League One side Northampton Town in an EFL Cup tie on Thursday morning (AEST) and champions Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United could trim its squad and sell to fund reinforcements.

The large size of the squad was revealed in the Europa League at Feyenoord last week, where Mourinho made eight changes and still fielded what on paper was a strong side.
