Breaking up a brawl came at a cost for police

A STREET brawl in Redbank on Saturday night ended in two alleged assaults on police officers.

At approximately 10.30pm, police responded to a complaint of a large fight taking place on Bridge St.

On arrival, the two responding police officers attempted to diffuse the situation, which, according to police involved 10 men.

A scuffle ensued and one of the male constables was allegedly repeatedly punched in the face and head by a 25-year-old man at the scene. The alleged offender was arrested.

"It will be further alleged that as he was being transported to the watch house, the man spat blood onto the back of the other male police officer's head and neck, from the back seat of the police vehicle," a police spokesperson said yesterday.

Both officers received medical treatment and disease testing following the alleged assaults.

A 25-year-old man from Redbank has been charged with two counts of serious assault on police.

He is due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on March 22.

The incident comes in the wake of an incident in Logan earlier this month, when a 39-year-old Shailer Park man was charged with two counts of assaulting police while armed with a weapon.
