Bruce Scott puts up hand for speaker role

MARANOA MP and former Deputy Speaker Bruce Scott has put his hand up for the prestigious role of Speaker of the House, but is not counting his chickens.

While on the road in the huge Queensland electorate, Mr Scott said he was willing to take on the top parliamentary role, if Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott wanted him.

Mr Scott sat on the Speaker's Panel for several years, and held the roles of both Second Deputy Speaker and Deputy Speaker during his parliamentary career.

He said he had the experience and knowledge of standing orders from the two most recent parliaments, and he "would be interested should that be what the leadership should like".

Mr Scott will travel to Canberra on Friday for party meetings to decide ministry and other senior parliamentary roles, including deliberations over who will sit in the Speaker's chair.

But he said he was not in a position to make further comment until after the meetings on Friday.

He said he did believe he had the "experience and understanding" to fill the role, but would not pre-empt any decision.

However, Mr Scott's bid for the role may face some opposition within Liberal ranks, with reports former minister Bronwyn Bishop is a favourite.

He will also face a long-term party convention that the role is usually given to a Liberal when the Coalition holds government, rather than a member of The Nationals.
