'Chopper' Read dies after long battle with cancer
INFAMOUS criminal and Australian anti-hero author Mark Brandon Read is dead after succumbing to a lengthy battle with liver cancer.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported the 58-year-old died at Royal Melbourne Hospital "after a long and courageous battle" on Wednesday afternoon, citing his manager Andrew Parisi.
"A fortnight ago, Mark made his last public appearance in front of a sold-out audience at Melbourne's Athenaeum Theatre.
"Despite his failing health, he delighted the audience with his skills as a raconteur and storyteller.
"This is how he would wish to be remembered, as someone who spun a great yarn and made many people laugh."
Read leaves behind wife Margaret and sons Roy and Charlie.
