Marlins splash out $373m for star’s signature

THE Western Bulldogs raised plenty of eyebrows when they signed nine-gamer Tom Boyd to a reported seven-year, $6 million deal during the recent AFL trade period.

That's not even in the ballpark compared to the contract home-run hero Giancarlo Stanton has just signed with Major League Baseball franchise the Miami Marlins.

The 25-year-old has agreed to what is believed to be the biggest deal in team sport history - a huge $A373.4 million over 13 years. That works out at $28.7 million a year, or $177,300 a game.

Because of its longevity, the contract tops the $335.5m over 10 years the Detroit Tigers shelled out for Miguel Cabrera in March, and also the $316m, also over 10 years, the New York Yankees agreed to with Alex Rodriguez prior to the 2008 season.

Stanton has hit 154 home runs in his MLB career and was runner-up to LA Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw in the 2014 MVP award.
