Mazda confirms more powerful petrol engine for CX-5

MAZDA has confirmed it will add a bigger 2.5-litre petrol engine to its CX-5 compact SUV from early 2013.

The new engine will replace the less powerful 2.0-litre powerplant in petrol all-wheel-drive Maxx, Maxx Sport and GT model grades. The front-wheel-drive versions will retain the 2.0-litre petrol engine.

The new 2.5-litre Mazda CX-5 will produce 138kW of power and 250Nm of torque, up 22% and 26% respectively over the smaller output engine currently available in AWD models. It will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as standard (no manual option is available).

Exact fuel use for the new 2.5-litre Mazda CX-5 is not yet confirmed, but the company says it will be less than 8.0 litres/100km. The 2.0-litre AWD CX-5, which is also available solely with a six-speed automatic transmission, uses 6.9 litres/100km.

Mazda Australia public relations manager Steve Maciver says the new engine will be available early next year, but admits there will be some impact on the price of the AWD models.

"There will be a slight price change when the new CX-5 goes on sale early next year, but we will confirm further details closer to the launch of the car," Maciver says.

Current pricing for the CX-5 Maxx AWD is $32,380 plus on-road costs; the Maxx Sport is $36,120; and the GT is $43,280.

The new 2.5-litre engine will also be used in the upcoming Mazda6 range, which goes on sale in December.
