Measles outbreak at Nambour church service

THE Sunshine Coast Public Health Unit has been notified of a confirmed case of measles of someone attending a church service at Nambour last Sunday.

The person attended St Joseph's Catholic Church 9am Mass, Nambour on Sunday November 16.

"People sitting near the front of the church are most likely to have been exposed," the health service said in a statement.

The health service is urging people to take precautions.

Those people who have been born after 1965 and who are sure they have not been vaccinated with a measles vaccine or had measles have been advised to obtain an injection of immunoglobulin from Nambour Clinic Family Medicine on Sydney St, Nambour this afternoon or tomorrow morning before 10am/.

This injection is free and your visit will be bulk billed.

To book an appointment phone  5441 1455.

"This is particularly important for children too young to be immunised, pregnant women and people with medical conditions or treatment that have suppressed the immune system," The Sunshine Coast Public Health Unit said in a statement.

The immunoglobulin is derived from human serum and is intended to provide protection against this exposure to measles. If people wish to have measles, mumps, rubella or chickenpox vaccination in future they will have to wait for at least 5 months after receiving the immunoglobulin.

If people don't immunoglobulin they should be aware of the symptoms of measles such as fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose and/or red inflamed eyes.

These symptoms usually become more severe over three days. This is then followed by a blotchy, dark red rash usually beginning at the hairline and spreading over the  body.

Any concerns, phone Public Health on 5409 6624 or 5409 6600.
