Meet Jamen, the future of the beef industry

JAMEN Harrison has been going to the Roma Saleyards since he was two-years-old, with his first memories are going to the store sale with his Dad Keith.

Now the 12-year-old wants to continue the success of his family's property, and he's started by selling his two prized Charbray and Angus steers at the Roam store sale.

The Harrisons own Euchlan, a 6000-acre property in St George, where they background heifers, fatting the cattle and selling them to the feed-lot.

But Jamen said he wanted to focus on breeding side of the cattle industry.

"I want to breed Santa Gertrudis and Hereford cattle, but still fatten cattle for the feed-lot," he said.

"I love working the cattle, I enjoy spending time in the paddock with the cattle to quiet them down, because temperament is very important."

Jamen is home-schooled and said he loved the challenge of balancing school work and running the property.

"I had to work twice as hard to be here today, because I had to complete my school work before I could come," he said.

Jamen has picked the right time to sell his cattle accord to his father Keith, who said the market was very strong at the moment.

"We have had eight inches of rain since Christmas, so there is good grass for feed and the prices are the best I have seen in years," he said.

"We are looking at buying weaner heifers, and building herd numbers to continue a strong future in cattle."

Elders Meandarra Cattle agent Andrew Cavanagh said the season had been positive, with prices remaining strong.

"It's a solid market all round, people won't be disappointed with the market," he said.

"Graziers are buying cattle to re-stock numbers, people are getting back into the market."
