Meetings to establish regional plans

COMMUNITIES in the tug-of-war between rural landholders and the resources sector finally will get to have their say this month.

State Development Minister Jeff Seeney will convene meetings in the Darling Downs and Central Queensland over the next fortnight as part of the process to establish statutory regional plans.

The plans will map out the relevant regions and pinpoint land uses, including strategic cropping land and areas appropriate for resource development.

Mr Seeney has promised to fast-track plans for the Darling Downs and Central Queensland because of strong community concerns surrounding coal seam gas development and the need to preserve prime agricultural land.

"They are the two areas where landholders have had to suffer the greatest impacts, where communities have had to deal with the boom conditions that are an important part of Queensland's economic future but a huge impost on those landholders and those communities," he told parliament on Thursday.

"We have put in place the basis for those statutory regional plans."

Mr Seeney, joined by local mayors and MPs, will convene a meeting in Dalby on July 24 and Emerald on July 27.

Industry leaders and community figures keen to be involved with the committees are invited to submit an expression of interest.

Mr Seeney aims to have the Darling Downs and Central Queensland statutory regional plans out for public consultation early next year and complete by August 2013.
