Men charged with theft, arson remanded in custody

TWO of the men involved in the chaos on Toowoomba streets on Friday night have been remanded in custody after their appearances in court.

Police will allege Damien James Reynolds, 21, was responsible for the theft of the first vehicle which was involved in the assault of a police officer at 4.15pm on Friday.

They will also allege Jesse Lee Jenkins, 24, was at the wheel of the car, evaded police and torched it in Athol a few hours after the assault.

Reynolds' application for bail was denied in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday, while Jenkins did not apply for it.

In the bail application hearing, Police Prosecutor Alastair Windsor said the accused posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending.

"Having served some 200 days in custody, within a month he's been charged with upwards of five or six more unlawful usages, and another 17 charges of dishonesty," Snr Const Windsor told the court.

"In light of this, and the brazen nature of some of the offending, the defendant represents an unacceptable risk of reoffending."

Defence solicitor Shane MacDonald said there was not enough evidence to put his client at the scene of several of the charges, and questioned the validity of the 4WD theft charge.
