Man claimed to have hepatitis C, spat on police

A MAN who spat at a police officer had earlier claimed to have hepatitis C.

The Maroochydore Magistrates Court was told Steven James Maher spat at the officer while his head was sideways and pressed on the watchhouse counter after he was arrested on another matter.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Allison Johnstone said the spittle landed on the officer's forearm and shirt.

Snr Const Johnstone said Maher had earlier spat six times at the Perspex separating him from police officers as they drove back to the station in a police car.

She said Maher told them: "I've got hep C, you dog c…s."

Maher, who pleaded guilty to nine charges, sat with his tattooed arms folded and face expressionless while the circumstances of charges against him were read to the court.

Snr Const Johnstone described spitting as "disgusting" and "degrading" but his lawyer, Anna Smith, noted there was no evidence the officer had even bothered with a test for communicable diseases.

Another man who lashed out at an ambulance officer and police has also been jailed.

The court heard Gregory James McKee, 34, struck an ambulance officer with his head, hit a female police officer, and then assaulted a police officer who tried to wrestle him under control.

Six weeks later, on December 18 last year, he spat in the face and eyes of a police officer.

McKee, who pleaded guilty to seven charges, was jailed for nine and 12 months on two counts of seriously assaulting a police officer, nine months for the serious assault on the ambulance officer, and four months for each of two counts of assaulting and obstructing a police officer. He was also ordered to pay compensation totalling $6300.
