Mercedes-Benz pick-up confirmed for late 2017 launch

IT'S the premium pick-up truck that was bound to happen.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its forthcoming X-Class ute in concept form ahead of a global launch late next year. Australia will be a key market for the luxo tradie Merc as our demand for high value work/lifestyle trucks grows ever stronger.

The X-Class pickups, which will share platforms with the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan utes thanks to a Daimler/Renault-Nissan alliance, should compete against range topping VW Amarok, Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and others, all priced around $60,000 in highest spec.

Mercedes is following market trends by showing two design variants - one a tough and functional double cab with high ground clearance, knobbly tyres, matte carbon wheel arches and winch kit, the other an "urban lifestyle" family vehicle with sleeker SUV styling, 22-inch wheels, LED lights, chrome accents and leather cabin.

Merc says the X-Class will "know no compromise" with a ladder-type frame, high-torque six-cylinder diesel engine, permanent all-wheel-drive and two on-demand diff locks.

Payload will be more than 1100kg and braked towing capacity 3500kg.
