More scholarships available to regional students

THERE are more scholarships available to students living in regional Australia to pursue further education.

Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien is urging local students to apply for new government-funded scholarships to study a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) course.

"Scholarships of up to $18,000 are available to help students in Wide Bay with the costs of studying STEM at university or a Vocational Education and Training institution,” Mr O'Brien said.

"STEM courses open up a lot of opportunities for employment with future growth, so this is a fantastic opportunity for Wide Bay kids to get the support and skills they need to enter a fast-growing, varied field.”

The Australian Government is increasing the number of scholarships available through the Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships program.

New guidelines will also make it easier for drought-affected students to apply, including families receiving the Farm Household Allowance.

"These scholarships are designed to break down the barriers to getting a STEM education, and could help a promising Wide Bay student realise their potential and get a STEM education that will open a world of future possibilities,” Mr O'Brien said.

The government has committed $58.1 million for more than 3150 scholarships for regional and remote students.

The first round of the scholarship program has already helped 504 regional and remote students to commence study in 2018.

Applications close on Friday, February 1 and offers will be made on February 11.
