Half a million Aussies already use services like Netflix

MORE than 680,000 Australian households are using overseas providers like Netflix to dodge geoblockers and save on downloading television shows and movies online.

Research by consumer group Choice found 684,000 households paid overseas providers for content to avoid higher domestic fees.

The research found another 428,000 households also planned to use such services in the next year.

Choice communications director Matt Levey said it was remarkable that a service like Netflix, which was blocked to Australians but would launch here next year, would drive such strong competition. The group has urged more competition be allowed on downloads.
