MORE than one million motor vehicles were sold in Australia between the start of the year and November, figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed on Thursday.

The ABS data the monthly number of vehicles sold rose from 87,662 in January to 96,655 vehicles sold in November, totalling more than 1,011,000 vehicles.

Of those, the vast majority remained passenger vehicles, or regular 2WD cars, hatchback and station wagons, with between 47,297 and 49,905 cars sold each month this year.

While sports utility vehicles (SUVs) market continued to grow during the year to November, the market started levelling off in recent months, with about 20,500 SUVs sold each month between August and November.

Sales of all motor vehicles in the year to date grew by a huge 23% in Tasmania, followed by 19% growth in sales in Western Australia; 11% in Queensland and, while sales growth was weakest in New South Wales, up just 2.6% in the same period.

Despite the poor sales growth figures, NSW still leads the sales numbers, with 29,215 vehicles sold in November, followed by 25,605 sold in Victoria and 20,534 sold in the same month in Queensland.
