Road blocked in police murder probe

GYMPIE police last night set up roadblocks and checked all vehicles travelling on Cedar Pocket Rd, near the scene of last week's mutilation murder.

Detective Inspector Bruce McNab said police pulled up every vehicle using the road between 5pm and 7pm.

The stop and interview procedure was carried out exactly one week after the discovery by a passing motorist of a headless and dismembered body dumped beside the road.

Det Insp McNab said he could not comment on rumours that a woman had been seen at the scene shortly after the estimated time the corpse was dumped, nor on another report of police searching drains under Gympie and finding unidentified items.

He said police last night were asking vehicle occupants if they had seen anything suspicious in the area.

"There are a number of vehicles which were seen in the area, but whose owners have not come forward, so we would like those people to call Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000) or Gympie police and tell us anything they can," he said.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was parked or stopped in the area and from anyone who saw anything unusual."

Police have so far revealed that the body is that of a man, killed shortly before it was discovered burning at the roadside, by a rural fire crew.

They have said the body was headless, its arms severed below the elbows and its lower section removed from just below the rib cage.

The remains also showed other signs of injury and DNA testing was underway to try to identify them.
