The mountain climb that’s great for kids
THE first time my daughter went up Mount Coolum she was four weeks old. The first time she walked it she was under three.
I'm not bragging (well, not completely) but highlighting that this is one walk most people with a reasonable level of fitness should be able to achieve.
And the rewards when you get to the top are worth any amount of sweat on the way up.
The views span all across Coolum to Mooloolaba and the hinterland.
Since National Parks upgraded the walk, erecting fantastic stone steps for the tricky parts, this already popular walk has become extremely popular.
The hardest part I find is trying to walk up and not get in the way of those who have decided Mount Coolum makes a fun treadmill.
If you are planning the trip with your family, consider going outside the pre and post working hours rush (between 6am and 9am and 4pm to 6pm). Public holidays can also be very busy.
In fact, we found the best time to do it is at full moon.
With a head torch, it is a fun walk to do in the moonlight, although I would be careful taking young children because of the trip hazard.
The 800-metre-long walk is steep in sections, but there are places to move to the side and have a breather.
I think National Parks advises you to allow about an hour for the entire journey up and down the 208-metre dome. I know people who do it in 17 minutes.
I find 45 minutes is a comfortable time which also allows a few minutes to enjoy the view and perhaps spot one of the rare peregrine falcons known to nest on the cliffs.

- Best time to walk is the early morning or late afternoon, but this is very popular and the path can get busy
