Mum admits daughter's cancer story made up

THE mother of a three-year-old girl reportedly diagnosed with leukaemia has admitted she lied to family, friends and the public about her daughter's treatment.

Following an investigation by The Courier-Mail, the girl's grandmother Tina Mancini has confirmed she doesn't have cancer.

The girl's story went viral last month after Ms Mancini told media the Toowoomba family had been prevented from boarding a Virgin flight from Brisbane to Newcastle - where they were allegedly going for stem cell treatment - because they were a few minutes late.

Ms Mancini said her daughter, Billie Jean Simon, told the family the girl was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in early February of this year and had since undergone six rounds of chemotherapy at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane before making her trip to Newcastle for further treatment.

After the publicity, Virgin refunded the family the cost of the airfares and gave them a $1000 travel voucher.

Now The Courier-Mail can reveal the girl never underwent chemotherapy at Lady Cilento Hospital. A hospital spokesman said there was no record of a child with that name being a patient.
