NAPLAN to move online by 2017

ABOUT one million students across the country will be sharpening their pencils as they wind into their second day of NAPLAN testing today.

And the Federal Government has announced results will be released earlier than in previous years.

Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students are undergoing reading tests today and will be tested on numeracy tomorrow.

Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne announced the testing would move online in 2017. This would take two to three years.

Some schools will trial online testing next year.

For this year's NAPLAN results, Mr Pyne said parents and teachers could expect earlier results, which would be available online from July 31.

Parents would then receive individual student reports, he said.

The stress of NAPLAN testing was put in the spotlight this week with reports of students becoming so anxious they started vomiting.

A psychologist provided advice to students via the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, urging students to remember that everyone was stressed during tests.

"Stress can help us to perform at high levels, as long as we know how to keep it in check," clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller said.

He also said the brain could be extremely clever but sometimes "pretty stupid".

"It believes what you tell it. If you hold a power posture, your brain notices and decides that you're feeling fine and lowers the levels of stress," he said.

Authority chief executive officer Robert Randall said NAPLAN tested what was taught in the classroom.

"There is no need for additional studying," he said.

From next year the Australian curriculum, which is now being implemented up to Year 10 in all states and territories, will be aligned with NAPLAN.

Mr Randall said moving the testing online from 2017 would mean better tests that met the needs of all students, including those with a disability.

He also said there would be more precise results.
