National road toll continues to climb

FATAL car crashes in three states on Thursday took the national Christmas road toll to 22.

A man died at a busy intersection in Adelaide's northern suburbs in the afternoon while, earlier, a driver was killed when his car exploded after hitting a truck head on in rural Victoria.

Since midnight Sunday three others have also been in South Australia and two in Victoria.

In NSW, a 50-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a car at Mudgee on Thursday, bringing the state-wide road toll to five in 24 hours.

Police also released details on Thursday of a double fatality in Western Australia on Boxing Day.

A 47-year-old male and his 39-year-old female partner were killed when their motorbike crashed into a Jeep north of Perth.

Another Western Australian man died when his car hit a tree on Christmas Eve.

One death has been recorded in Queensland and Tasmania.
