Nerds unite for all things geek and gaming
THE swish of the sword and its clang on the shield made for interesting sights and sounds at Jessica Park when a bunch of "nerds" fought an epic battle.
A live demonstration of LARPing - Live Action Role Playing - took place at the Minyama park yesterday to preview the inaugural Epic Diem Nerd Culture Expo next weekend.
The expo is set to draw thousands from across the country for all things geek and gaming.
LARP is similar to a Skirmish-style game, pitting two teams against each other.
The teams interact with each other in character, often using foam swords and axes, foam balls as magic and other props to create a fantasy world.
LARP will be one element of the festival on September 21 when dozens of exhibitors cater for thousands of people with a shared interest in pop culture, science fiction, animation, comic books, video games and renaissance.
Laser tag, table-top war-gaming and role-playing events will sit alongside wrestling matches, archery, retro video games and card tournaments.
All of that will mean 11 hours of epic nerdiness at the University of the Sunshine Coast sports stadium.
"The expo gives geeks a great place to hang out with other geeks, as well as providing an opportunity for the wider community to get a glimpse of all the fun and imagination that modern 'nerd' culture has to offer," organiser Jason Adams said.
"It's a no-holds-barred epic day where everyone can indulge in their science fiction, role-playing and video game passions without being told it is for kids and you should grow up."
