New Burnett business owner says retirement can wait
SOUTH Burnett business owner, Linda Thomas, 73 has come out of retirement more times than she cares to remember.
Not one to sit still too long, Ms Thomas' exciting new venture is the Kumbia bed and breakfast, Cup 'n' Saucer Cottage.
"This is my sixth time out of retirement," she said.
"I can't survive without having a real sense of purpose."
Linda and her husband first came to the region nearly twenty years ago.
"My husband did the school bus run and I did the mail run," she said.
"Back then we didn't know where Kumbia was."
The travelling couple were on a caravanning trip around the country when money got tight and they started to look for business opportunities.
"We didn't want a nine-to-five job so my husband picked up a newspaper for business ideas," Ms Thomas
"I remember him saying, 'whereabouts is Kumbia?'."
They moved to the South Burnett town and were immediately impressed with the hospitality shown by the Kumbia community.
"We wondered how as outsiders, the locals would accept us," Ms Thomas said.
"Well, we were absolutely welcomed with open arms. The people there are so friendly.
"They were knocking on our door the first day we moved in, asking if they could help or if we needed any information on the area."
In 2005, the couple left to move to Brisbane and be closer to family.
However Ms Thomas was travelling back and forth for various South Burnett organisations she was involved in.
Not able to stay away, in 2018, she made the return back to Kumbia.
"Often I would just go on to realestate.com just to see who was on the move or who was leaving," Ms Thomas said.
But during one chance online search, the owner of Kumbia's brand new bed and breakfast knew she had found the perfect location for her new business.
"I said 'that's my b and b'," she said.
The former antique store owner and retired micro-biologist has fitted out the Cup 'n' Saucer cottage with some charming Australian furniture.
"I bought all this lovely old furniture made from silky oak, cedar and maple," she said.
The three room property is now open and ready for travellers, passers-by and locals to enjoy a relaxing and pleasant stay and some good ol' country hospitality.
Cup 'n' Saucer bed and breakfast is located at 17 Bell St Kumbia.
