New friends and improved health through tai chi

IMPROVED balance, flexibility and movement awaits Kingaroy residents who take up tai chi.

June Kimlin organised the first tai chi class in town in 2005 and was overwhelmed by the response from the community.

"The first day we started at Senior Citizens we thought we would have 20 people and over 60 turned up,” she said.

"Each year we have new ones come in and there are beginner classes starting on January 31.”

She continues to take part in the ancient Chinese practice which she believes has helped her stay mobile.

"I encourage anyone - young or old, people with or without disabilities - to improve their balance and memory,” Ms Kimlin said.

"It is a great social thing to do because everyone gets to know one another and we are all like family.”

Beginner and intermediate classes will start for 2019 on Thursday, January 31, at the Uniting Church Hall, which attract up to 20 students.

The intermediate group will run from 9-10am followed by the beginners group from 10.15-11.15am.

For the more experienced, an advanced group will meet from Friday, February 1, from 9am-10am at the Kingaroy Senior Citizens Centre.

Students are asked to allow 30 minutes to enrol between January 31 and February 14.
