New storm brewing off NSW could hit Sunshine Coast

METEOROLOGISTS are warning that the Sunshine Coast could be in for some wild weather.

The same weather system that caused so much devastation in Sydney and the Hunter Valley last week could be forming again.

Early forecasts suggest a new east coast low is brewing off the northern NSW coast.

A weather bureau spokesman said it was too early to determine the exact position, timing and intensity of the system.

"Early indications suggest the main impacts of intense rainfall and strong winds will be on coastal areas in the state's north-east including the Northern Rivers and Mid North coasts, with heavy falls also likely for south-east Queensland," he said.

The rain and winds are predicted to reach their peak on Friday.

A meteorologist with Weatherzone said the wild conditions could last right through the weekend.

But it was unlikely to be as brutal as the weather which hit Sydney last week.

"That was a once-in-a-generation east coast low," he said. "This one, if it eventuates, will likely be a fair bit weaker."

He said he did not expect the winds to reach any more than 80kmh.
