NEXT year's superboats event in Hervey Bay could feature international drivers as the Offshore Superboat Championships look to merge with New Zealand's competition.

As the final round of the season drew to a close in Hervey Bay yesterday, it has been revealed negotiations are underway to make next season an international category.

Some of the best superboat drivers in New Zealand could compete in the season, which is hoped to again finish in Hervey Bay.

Acting events councillor Stuart Taylor said Fraser Coast Opportunities staff were talking with the series about coming back again in 2016.

"I'm confident they'll want to return," Cr Taylor said.

"They absolutely love coming here."

SUV RAM Trucks driver Conn Saloumidis told the Chronicle the series could feature several Kiwi teams.

"We're looking at about 12 to 15 boats next year and three or four teams from New Zealand," he said.

Saloumidis' love for the Fraser Coast was tested on Saturday when calm waters put his boat out for the whole weekend.

"We rolled it over in a corner and torched the motor," he said.

"It's a throw away- probably $13,000 worth.

"We had an awesome day watching the race."

The Supercat 600HP class was won by Hogs Breath Racing and Maritimo won the Supercat Extreme 1000HP class.
