MACKAY'S Muslim community has urged residents not to judge them by one extremist.

Dr Tareq Kamleh, a former Mackay doctor who appeared in an Islamic State propaganda video, attended the Bakers Creek Mosque a spokesperson confirmed yesterday.

However, the Islamic Society of Mackay spokesperson said judging Dr Kamleh's "religiosity" would have been impossible.

"Mackay has a very small Muslim community with the majority working as professionals in various fields," the spokesperson said.

"Over the years many Muslims from across the country have come and left the Mackay community.

"Dr Tareq Kamleh lived in Mackay and used to attend the Mosque, it will be very hard to judge for anyone within the community to measure his religiosity."

The spokesperson said there were hundreds of millions of Muslims across the world who embraced their faith "seriously".

"So to suggest that a Muslim who embraces his faith seriously is more likely to join ISIS is an unfair assumption," they said.

Southern media articles have quoted an alleged colleague of Dr Kamleh from his time in Mackay as saying he had changed his habits while working in Mackay.

"I didn't think we had too many radical fundamentalists up in Mackay," the colleague was quoted as saying.

Mackay Hospital and Health Service was contacted for further comment yesterday but declined the offer, to protect their staff.

The propaganda video featured an Australian man who identified himself as Abu Yusuf and was confirmed as Dr Kamleh on Sunday.
