No question of quiz show's appeal
TOM Gleisner looks like he's having fun as quiz master.
That's because he is.
The comedian and TV presenter is back hosting a third season of Channel 10's comedy quiz show Have You Been Paying Attention?.
"We've always found comedy sits really well in winter, when the days get a bit shorter and colder, people turn to TV," Gleisner tells APN.
"Summer's more given over to things involving racquets and bats. I'm excited to be back. This show is the most fun I've had on camera in a long time."
That's a big statement coming from Gleisner, who has worked on everything from Frontline to The Panel and The Castle as part of the Working Dog Productions team.
Have You Been Paying Attention? sees regular and guest panellists answer questions about the current affairs of the past week.
"When we set up the show for the obvious intention to amuse, we said it's got to be a quiz show," Gleisner says.
"It's got to have rules. I get almost annoyed when hosts go 'I'll give you both 10 points', you know? He got it, she didn't. For all the loose edges we do try to make sure answers are properly rewarded and points worked out."
While the show was never designed to be a ratings juggernaut, it has gained a loyal following thanks to the efforts of Gleisner and regulars including Ed Kavalee, Sam Pang, Mick Molloy and Jane Kennedy.
"Probably the big change in TV over the past decade is people have so many choices now," he says.
"Once upon a time all you had to do really was get on air and you'd get three quarters of a million people watching. Now when people switch on free-to-air TV that's a conscious choice. There are a lot of other options and we're acutely aware of that. I'm pleased people are tuning in."
Have You Been Paying Attention? airs Mondays at 8.30pm on Channel 10.
