Us and them - Mayor confirms meeting without Noosa pair
SUNSHINE Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says he won't rule out excluding two Noosa-based councillors from meetings as the massive job of "disentangling" the regional council gets under way.
Councillors Russell Green and Tony Wellington were incensed when their fellow councillors held a "secret" meeting on the eve of Saturday's de-amalgamation vote.
Cr Jamieson yesterday confirmed the Noosa pair was excluded from the meeting as the topic was de-amalgamation.
It was likely similar confidential discussions would be held in coming months, but there could equally be a need for meetings involving only him and the current Noosa councillors.
"I don't regard the meetings as secret. I just think they're meetings that have a purpose and the attendees need to have a role in delivering that purpose and, if they don't, then they don't need to be there," Cr Jamieson said yesterday in the aftermath of the landslide vote in favour of de-amalgamation.
He described the controversy as a "non issue", saying local residents had a right to know their councillors were acting in the best long-term interests ..."
"I would think over the next nine to 10 months there'll be a variety of meetings like that - it's impossible to think it could work any other way.
"There will be issues that require very careful consideration affecting Noosa, where I can imagine myself and the two Noosa councillors dealing with that, and there will be issues that affect the rest of the Sunshine Coast, and there will be lots of issues where we will all participate as usual."
Cr Green described the explanation as "spin" and suggested the mayor could not promote the idea of councillors working together for a common good, if he was at the same time excluding some councillors.
"If you're discussing region-wide issues and implications, you don't exclude anyone from the meetings," he said. "I am extremely disappointed if that's going to happen; that's just not the way to do business.
"Last time I checked, I'm still a councillor for the entire Sunshine Coast region until December 31."
