Nothing cheesy about this 'mitey' Australia Day sausage
NOTHING says Australia Day more than sausages sizzling away on the barbecue but Kingaroy's Gourmet Butcher has made them that little bit more Aussie.
Wayne Pohlner from Gourmet Butchery said his cheese and Vegemite sausages were proving a hit with customers in the lead-up to this year's Australia Day celebrations.
"They are selling well and we are getting some good feedback," he said.
Forget what you might think a cheese and Vegemite sausage tastes like, Mr Pohlner says you won't be disappointed.
"They are very tasty, it is quite a good mixture," he said.
"It is not as strong as you think."
As well as the cheese and Vegemite sausages, the innovative butcher has also made lamb sausages with pumpkin, fetta and cheese as well as a tasty lamb, mint and rosemary sausage.
"Every one loves their lamb on Australia Day, so we thought we would get into the theme," Mr Pohlner said.
Social gatherings around the barbecue are tradition for many Australian families and the gourmet butcher has plenty of options to make your party a tasty hit.
"Besides the sausages, we have a lamb, mint and rosemary chop. We will do up a few lamb kebabs as well," Mr Pohlner said.
"It's all about getting into the Aussie spirit."
Mr Pohlner said he also had a few ideas for other events throughout the year.
"This year we will be getting into the State of Origin theme with some maroon and blue sausages," he said.
A big advocate for Kingaroy's Baconfest last year, Mr Pohlner said he was looking forward to getting involved again this year.
"We were talking about having a bacon contest amongst all the local butchers," he said.
