NZ Prime Minister puts Cairns on holiday shortlist

CAIRNS has been put on the holiday shortlist by New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her family.

The Kiwi leader was invited to spend her next holiday in Cairns when flights resume by Cairns Holiday Apartment managers Will and Lyn Melville-Rea and Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

They have received a positive response.

Ms Ardern's private secretary thanked the couple and the email was tweeted by their daughter, Hannah Melville-Rea, which prompted a response from Ms Ardern's fiance, Clarke Gayford.

Mr Gayford, who fronts popular New Zealand television show Fish of the Day, wanted to know if the fishing was any good in Cairns.

"I'll put Cairns on a family holiday shortlist for some time in the future … whenever that may be," he wrote.

Talks have been under way between the Queensland Government and Air New Zealand about reopening flight paths between the two destinations, with Cairns pitched as a possible port of arrival.

The Melville-Reas offered to babysit Neve Ardern Gayford so New Zealand's first couple could dine out and suggested the three visit Muddy's Playground and the Cairns Aquarium.

"It's been really tough for so many businesses and we would love to see Kiwis start coming here," Ms Melville-Rea said.

"The weather is really good. The tropics, the lushness, it's a perfect place for people to come and getting the response on Twitter was amazing."

TTNQ chief executive Mark Olsen said he hoped Ms Ardern and her family would be on the first direct flight available from New Zealand to Cairns.

"From June to August is a great time of the year to shoot an episode of Fish of the Day as this is when our iconic Great Barrier Reef species are active," he said. "It's a fantastic idea from Will and Lyn and we look forward to seeing more Kiwis choosing Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef for their next holiday."

This is the second invitation to Ms Ardern to holiday in Cairns, with Member for Cairns Michael Healy issuing one after bumping into her at a restaurant in northern NSW.
