CYCLING: Australian BMX star Caroline Buchanan is in a positive mood despite suffering multiple injuries in a car crash.

The two-time Olympian and former world champion posted images of her lying in a hospital bed in a neck brace following the accident.

Her face was all bloodied and the 27-year-old also suffered a broken nose and sternum and collapsed lung.

"I wouldn't say 2017 ended quite as planned. It's been a rough couple of days in ICU after a vehicle roll," Buchanan said on Instagram.

"I just moved to a private room and everything is moving in a positive recovery direction.

"I will keep you guys up to date as we go ... Off season just got a little more tough."

Buchanan has eight world titles in BMX and mountain biking. She made the final of the BMX race at the 2016 Rio Olympics but missed out on a medal after crashing in the decider.

She claimed her fifth mountain bike world title in August in the four-cross discipline, a month after winning a silver medal at the BMX world championships in July.
