ON FIRE: Burnett teen named in national cricket team
MURGON'S Courtney Sippel has been named in the Queensland Fire squad for the opening round of the Women's National Cricket League on Friday.
Fire will host the NSW Breakers at Robina's Bill Pippen Oval on Friday.
The game will start at 9.30am and it will be the first time the venue has hosted a WNCL game.
Fire will train at Bill Pippen Oval from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon ahead of the game.
The team has named 13 players in the side with one to be omitted and the 12th player to be named at the toss.
Sippel has also been named in the team to play the ACT Meteors on Sunday at Allan Border Field from 9.30am.
While it will be Sippel's first WNCL game, in her first season with the team, the Fire will be boosted by the experience of former Australian batter Jess Duffin.
Duffin played three tests, 50 ODIs and 64 T20Is before retiring from international cricket in 2015 and has been named in the Fire squad for the first two matches.
Duffin has successfully mixed cricket with Australian rules football, playing for Collingwood in the first two seasons of AFLW before signing with North Melbourne.
She also plays for the Renegades in the Rebel Women's Big Bash League.
Fire coach Pete McGiffin said Duffin's experience and skill would be an asset for the matches against defending champions NSW and the Meteors.
"She's very professional and has hit them nicely in the warm-up games we have had,” he said.
