SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR NOMINEE: Summer Millard loves being active whether that be on stage dancing, on track at little athletics or while swimming, riding and running in triathlon.

This year Summer represented La Crème Dance Academy and took part in concerts and eisteddfods.

Summer is one of 50 students at the academy who do as much dancing as they possibly can.

She does ballet, jazz, hip hop, acro, tap contemporary and pointe.

"My friends do it and I enjoy being with them and learning new things and keeping healthy at the same time as having fun,” she said.

"Pointe really pushes me because we are dancing on our toes and we are always learning new steps.”

Ashley Mangun is Summer's teacher this year for tap, acro and ballet and said Summer is committed to dancing and has great expression on stage.

"She takes very opportunity given to her and she is always doing as much as she can to achieve,” she said.

"She has improved, she works her hardest and does the best she can.”

"Her strongest genre is tap and she is always listening in class.

"You can tell she enjoys what she does by the way that she is in the classes.”

Summer successfully auditioned to be a part of a production of Cinderella in April 2018 with Toowoomba Ballet Theatre.

She was very happy to be successful with 36 dancers auditioning.

Despite this success the highlight of the year for Summer was being selected in the Wide Bay triathlon team.

It was the first time the Year 7 Nanango State High School student had made a Wide Bay team.

"I only started triathlon this year so I thought I would give it a go and see what it is like and it is really fun.,” she said.

Her favourite leg of the event is the run, which is no surprise as a member of Nanango Little Athletics Centre.

She has found great success on the track.

She was part of the Nanango Under 13's medley relay team who placed second at the Sunshine Coast regional relays last month.

"When you are with team even if you don't do well not all the pressure is on you and you have your friends with you can talk to them,” she said.

"You don't want to let your team down.”

Summer's favourite event is the 400 metres and she also enjoys sprinting.

Summer also referees soccer in Brisbane every second weekend blowing the whistle on Under 10's, 11 and 12 games.

She became involved through her mum, Dawn, who nominated her for sportsperson of the year.

Dawn believes Summer has great qualities as a referee.

"She knows the rules, keeps her cool on the field and you have got to have the friendliness as well as being firm and she does that,” Dawn said.

This year Summer met a former FIFA which has inspired her to also become a highly ranked referee and aim to travel the world refereeing.

She is always looking for new opportunities to become involved in sport.

This year she took part in a volleyball camp in Brisbane with the Australian men's coach.

Summer said the skills she learnt at the camp helped with her unit on volleyball in physical eduction at school.

In 2018 Summer aims to make the athletics and cross country Wide Bay teams while continuing her commitment to her passion, dancing.
