Operation Seagrape hunts bomb threat offenders

QUEENSLAND police have called for Ipswich parents to remain calm despite a series of bomb threats this month.

Schools across the region have fallen victim to the prank calls, which use a robotic voice and are generally re-routed through other government phone systems to avoid being traced back to the offenders.

Police have set up Operation Seagrape in Brisbane to investigate the source of the hoax calls, but said there was no cause for alarm among concerned parents.

Several more calls were received at schools outside Ipswich yesterday.

"Whilst each call is evaluated on its merits - with individual police and education responses - the majority of the calls appear to be similar in nature and pattern, designed to cause signification disruption and media coverage," a QPS spokesman said.

"At this time, there remains no credible evidence the threats could be carried out here."

Detectives have spoken with two people following investigations into a bomb hoax at Bundamba State Secondary College earlier this week. Two 16-year-old boys were dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

Police said the Bundamba incident was not related to the on-going series of threatening phone calls and was being treated as a copycat offence.

"Investigations into the threatening phone calls are continuing, but at this time there is no cause for alarm. Police would like to remind the public that making threatening phone calls is a serious criminal offence, and these incidents will be fully investigated.

"Those convicted could face up to five years in jail."
