Our last organic dairy closes after 22 years
HARD working dairy farmers Mark and Pam Comello have sadly closed the doors on their organic dairy farm.
Ivyhome Dairy in Kingaroy has been their home for 22 years.
Mrs Comello said the dry weather as well as their children taking a different career path were the biggest factors in their decision to finish up.
"The kids have their own careers, dairy farming is just not that enticing," she said.
The couple worked tirelessly to establish the only organic dairy and processing plant in the South Burnett.
Producing milk, yoghurt and soft cheeses, the Comellos had to work hard to gain organic status for their 200 hectare farm and products.
"We have only ever farmed organically, just like my father did. Before all the chemicals and fertilizers," Mrs Comello said.
The property has now been sold and a clearing sale will be held this Saturday August 18, run by Steffensen Auctioneering.
Mrs Comello had some advice for the next generation of farmers.
"The whole industry needs to change. There is so much paperwork these days," she said.
The couple will move to Crestmead near Brisbane to be closer to family and they are looking forward to the next chapter.
"We haven't had a proper holiday for over 20 years so it'll be good to have some downtime," Mr Comello said.
The Comellos are not sure how they feel about packing up and moving away from their long-time home.
"It's a tumultuous time for us that's for sure. We have had to sell cows we loved. It will be very sad when we drive out for the last time," Mrs Comello said.
