Owen gets it Wright at Snapper

SURFING: Australian Owen Wright has completed one of surfing's great comeback stories with victory at the Quiksilver Pro over great mate Matt Wilkinson.

Wright took an extended break from the sport after suffering a head injury in the lead-up to the 2015 Pipeline Masters in Hawaii.

His comeback was completed in messy surf conditions at Snapper Rocks against a man who has supported him throughout his injury.

"That was unreal, I'm stoked. To have Wilko here with me is unbelievable," Wright said.

The pair hugged, laughed and shared a few tears in the water at the end of their final with thousands watching on from the beach.

Stephanie Gilmore took out the women's event in front of her hometown fans.

The six-time world champion defeated American Lakey Peterson in the final with a two-wave score of 16.60 points (out of a possible 20).

Peterson managed just 12.66 in one of her finest performances to date on the world tour.
