Patrick aims for dressage age champion record

PATRICK Frohloff, 13, is under pressure as he attempts to break Gabe Crane's standing record of seven age champion dressage titles.

The St Mary's Catholic College student was able to get one step closer after he became age champion at the Fraser Coast Equestrian Competition in Maryborough.

Patrick faced up against the odds of riding on an unusually shaped test, but atop Ascot, he blitzed the rest of the field.

"I can go for double digits (in the age champions)," he said.

Despite the conditions, Patrick finished first in the led hack, dressage and pleasure hack, which he backed up with a second-place finish in the rider class.

"I've got no choice. I've got to sit upright. Otherwise I get into trouble from my coach, Nicole Kimlin," he said.

In his preparation for his next title, Patrick said he did not plan too far ahead, but would like to compete in another state title.

Budding student Jayde Novak, 17, takes a more planned approach.

In the next year, Jayde wants to compete in the Equestrian Australia state championship, young rider, state interschool championship and national interschool championship.

Jayde was able to finish reserve age champion at the Fraser Coast Equestrian Competition.

Atop warmblood-cross Ollie, whom she has had for two months, Jayde finished first in the led hack, dressage and pleasure hack, and second in the rider class.

"He's good to train. He's almost stupid, but intelligent at the same time," she said.
