Police appeal for information after roadside death

Hit and run driver urged to come forward

UPDATE: The man struck and killed in an apparent hit and run in Oakey has been identified as a 43-year-old father who lived about 500m from where he died.

Police are investigating the fatal incident, with detectives urging the driver of the vehicle which struck the man to come forward.

Investigations suggest the man had been walking south along Hamlyn Rd towards his home after he was last seen leaving an Oakey pizza shop at about 7.30pm.

Police believe the man was struck sometime between 7.30pm and 8.30pm along Hamlyn Rd, and a witness has reported seeing a vehicle on the road around that time.

The witness told police they saw a vehicle perform a u-turn and backtrack after hitting the man who was discovered by two women joggers about 4.45am today.

"We've had information come to hand that would indicate a vehicle was seen on that road however no one has been able to give us any information as to the type of vehicle," Darling Downs Detective Inspector Dave Isherwood said.

"We're appealing to members of the public to come forward.

"What we have gleaned from information so far is the vehicle was seen on the road that did turn and headed back in the same direction it originally came.

"Indications are that (the driver) didn't stop, but I mean our witness was a fair way away.

"What we are doing is appealing for members of the public to come forward."

Det. Insp. Isherwood urged the driver to contact police.

"If the driver of the vehicle is listening, we would ask them to come forward," he said.

"If the scenario is the way we think it is, it is more than likely a fatal traffic accident and as such, it will be investigated accordingly.

"If the gentleman has stepped onto the road and the vehicle has collided, the fact they haven't remained at the scene is bad enough but (the driver will) worsen the situation if they don't come forward."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
