PEOPLE'S CHOICE: Region's best community group is pan-tastic

BIGGER than the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

That's the long-term goal for the hugely popular South Burnett event, BaconFest.

BaconFest president Kathryn Stevens was all smiles when she found out they had won the South Burnett Times People's Choice Awards for best community group.

"It's quite humbling," Ms Stevens said.

"There are lots of community groups in the South Burnett doing amazing things for our region."

Ms Stevens said when the hard-working committee members first sat down to organise the inaugural BaconFest last year, they had big ambitions.

"We wanted to make a big impact," she said.

"We aspire to being a big festival."

After the first successful event last year, that goal has only intensified.

"In 50 years' time, we hope to be as big as the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers," Ms Stevens said.

As organiser of the award-winning festival, Ms Stevens said a good community group is one where all the members have something in common.

"With BaconFest, I guess we all have a similar sense of humour," she said.

"We all enjoy having a laugh and not taking things too seriously."

She said it was important to realise the committee members were giving up their valuable time.

"You have to be willing to be forgiving," she said.

"If something doesn't get done immediately, that's okay.

"Sometimes life gets in the way."

In light of the recent vegan activists protesting around the country, the BaconFest president said they were always on the radar.

"As a festival organiser you would be silly not to have some concerns," Ms Stevens said.

"We are working very closely with police to make sure that if any activity is planned that they are aware of it and the necessary steps can be taken."

In next week's People's Choice Awards we ask: 'What is the region's best takeaway store?'
