Search on for mystery sandcastle maker

THERE'S a phantom sandcastle maker somewhere on the Fraser Coast, who comes out when people aren't around and leaves behind astoundingly detailed works of art.

According to the story going around, the phantom sand sculptor struck in late afternoon or evening on Wednesday at Torquay beach, when all were at home or asleep.

It was walkers out for an early morning stroll who found the piece: a castle complete with tiny windows, thatched gates, winding roads and a roof-top cross.

So stunning was the work that Fraser Coast councillor Darren Everard - who watched the sea claim the sandcastle - has called for its creator to come forward.

"I would love to know who did it. I would like to congratulate them because lots of people were walking past and were just in awe of the damn thing," he said.

"To me it was a shame that the tide had to come in."

Cr Everard described it as one of the "prettiest things" he had seen on a beach.

He guessed it was built late Tuesday afternoon or evening, and was located on the beach to the east of the surf club.

Anyone who knows the identity of the phantom sandcastle maker is urged to contact the Chronicle editorial@frasercoastchronicle.com.au or Cr Everard via the Fraser Coast Regional Council office in Hervey Bay.
