IT MAY have been cold and dark on Anzac Day morning but it didn't stop hundreds of school children from going out with their families to pay their respects before sunrise.

Hivesville Progress Association president Barbara Hockey led the Hivesville Anzac Day dawn service.

For her, Anzac Day is an emotional day.

"My late husband was a lieutenant with the army reserve in Kingaroy for 15 years,” she said.

"He is no longer with us but he is always there in the background.”

Ms Hockey praised the students of Wheatlands State School for their involvement in the dawn service.

"It is great seeing the Wheatlands school here, seeing the young ones here and doing a reading for us,” she said.

"We want them to understand we are not celebrating war, we are celebrating freedom.”

Ms Hockey said it was important the next generation continued to remember what the past, present and future soldiers did for us.

"They need to understand where their freedom came from, with the hope that eventually we wont have those wars and we will live in peace with each other,” she said.
