Pilot safe after last minute landing in peanut field

A RECREATIONAL glider needed to make a bumpy landing in a peanut field this afternoon after he encountered bad weather during a training exercise.

Makota Ichikawa was in the air in his glider to practice for this weekend's 2015 Queensland Gliding Championships.

He was on his way back to land at Kingaroy Airport after a few hours of training for the competition.

"I thought I had enough altitude to get back to Kingaroy but I hit some bad air to the north," Mr Ichikawa said.

He made a safe landing on a peanut field near the Bunya Hwy at about 3.45pm and said he was still looking forward to the competition.

He said although it was "not too often" he was forced to make an emergency landing, he wasn't in any danger.

"I've done it before so it's OK," he said.

The 2015 Queensland State Gliding Championship starts on Saturday and runs until October 10.
