PLO Glen keeping the peace for 20 years

FOR long-term police liaison officer Glen Waters, it's all about preventative measures and keeping the peace.

Police Liaison Officers (PLOs) are a link between the community and police and help to promote trust and understanding with the aim to reduce and prevent crime, divert people from the criminal justice system, and advise and educate police officers on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural issues.

Mr Waters is a Senior PLO with more than 20 years experience.

He became a PLO for his home town St George in November 1997 and remained in the role for more than 10 years before transferring to Toowoomba.

"We try to keep our young people out of the criminal justice system," he said.

"It's talking about community issues with the young fellows.

"We also have different activities throughout the year.

"We're out there to be seen and offer a bit of guidance and advice.

"We also educate young police officers on cultural matters."

Mr Waters was presented with his 20-year Queensland Police Service medal by Superintendent Mark Kelly during a NAIDOC Week flag raising ceremony at the Toowoomba Police Station.

Mr Waters said PLOs had been working hard liaising with the community during difficult times following the death of Toowoomba woman Debbie Combarngo.

"We know as the community knows that it's been difficult over the past six to eight weeks," he said.

"We've been talking with the families and the community to keep the peace."
