HARD LINE:
HARD LINE: "The easy answer is stop all further Muslim immigration” - Senator Fraser Anning shares a Coffee Chat with Matt Collins. Michael Nolan

PODCAST: Controversial Senator shares his bold views

SOMETIMES it's the controversial topics that are the ones we should be talking about. There is an argument that our politicians don't take a hard-lined approach because it doesn't win votes. Queensland independent senator Fraser Anning doesn't seem to care. Outspoken about immigration, same-sex marriage and other equally sensitive topics, Senator Anning suggests a nationwide ban of Muslim and Sudanese immigration. He made headlines and was labelled a racist when he attended a protest where demonstrators made Nazi salutes. But he says he just wants the best for the country.

Matt Collins:

I listened to your first speech in parliament, where you mentioned you are a big fan of the 'Joh era'. Why were you such a fan of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen?

Fraser Anning:

When Joh was running the place this was a state everyone wanted to come to. Things were being built. Dams, roads, infrastructure was incredible. He kept the state largely a good, wholesome place to come to. He had a long-range vision for the country. He wasn't one of these guys who is just there for the next three years.

MC:

You have had some strong views on lots of topics. You were with the Katter party where Bob Katter himself said he was "1000 per cent" on board with your comments, but within months you were kicked out of the party. Let me ask the question, why?

FA:

I think Bobby ran out of heart a little bit. He might have had a bit of pressure from the people who were going to give him their preferences. Possibly the Labor Party and maybe some of his funding going, I'm not sure. He thought some of the things I said were racist, which they weren't.

MC:

Sometimes these hard discussions have to be brought up, because if we just sweep them under the rug they will essentially become bigger problems. They have to be addressed head on. Do you think you are addressing them the most effective way possible?

FA:

Well I guess. I'm just saying it the way I see it. Muslim immigration is not what Australia needs, I don't believe. I think it is the greatest threat to our society and it is already proven that in every other country they have gone into.

MC:

My two cents is yes, those issues are happening, but it is not every single Sudanese that is coming in. It is not every single Muslim that is coming in.

FA:

You're right.

MC:

But further to that, is there an easy answer to that problem?

FA:

Yeah, the easy answer is stop all further Muslim immigration and also from Sudan. Why is it that it is only the white developed countries that need diversity? There is no diversity needed in Sudan apparently. All we are doing is destroying our own society. In 1970 we had 99per cent European, we are now down to less than 70per cent European. It won't be long before we are the minority.

MC:

Let me play devil's advocate for a second. Yes, there are something like 196 countries, but essentially we all live on this place called Earth. Why do we have to have these walls? Why can't we all live as one?

FA:

Well, I think most Australians would agree with you. If people integrate into a society like how we behave, I don't think people would mind. But we don't have integration, we have parallel societies. You are not welcome there and that's not integration.

MC:

You and I both live in the country, do you think those issues are being seen by country people?

FA:

A lot of the time no, Matt. I think that's a bit of the problem. However the government have said they are going to start moving these people because the problems in the city are pretty bad. They are going to start moving groups of them into regional areas.
